You must learn one thing.
The world was made to be free in.
Give up all the other worlds
except the one to which you belong.
How do we ensure we are living in alignment with our souls’ longings when daily life is overscheduled, fragmented and often exhausting? What does it mean to let go of life-depleting tasks and “to dos” in exchange for life-giving interests and passions? What is the invitation (the call to action) for our creative spirits as we contemplate the meaning of spiritual/creative freedom?
The answers to these questions can only be discovered when we give ourselves permission to take a time-out from frenetic busyness and connection with technology. Permitting a brief pause in the day, a longer weekly pause, and a still longer monthly pause opens time and space to honor inner callings, yearnings and visions.
What would it feel like to grant your Self permission to spend at least thirty minutes each day as time to tend to your creative and spiritual longings? Can you also imagine weaving in momentary ways throughout your day to Self-nurture your soul? Contemplate the refreshing experience of daily, weekly and monthly pauses to drink deeply from the well of creative and spiritual fulfillment.
Step 1: Discern
For one month (using journaling as a tool), spend time each day with your journal discerning your heart’s longings, dreams and visions, your prayers and sacred art-making. Make sketches, doodle, write your prayers and don’t edit your responses. Give yourself permission to spend 30 minutes each day for journaling to get in touch with your deepest creative passions. Reconnect with your senses as conduits to your inner guidance and divine wisdom. Use this time to gain clarity and perspective about what fuels and energizes you and your life. Refer to the journal prompts below to help you get started.
Step 2: Explore
Each week, set aside 1-2 hours (perhaps on the weekend) to focus on one or more of your heart’s desires. You may find it helpful to disconnect from technology for a day or a weekend to create time for reflection, walks in nature, and journaling.
When you give yourself time for exploration you may discern that knitting is a current creative passion, during your weekly extended exploration time you might visit a local knit shop, inquire about classes and survey various fibers, techniques, and patterns. This is your weekly excursion to dive deeply into the exploration of those interests, activities, and pursuits that make your heart sing.
A little side note… I was inspired to write Ink and Honey during a time of relaxation and exploration. One never knows what awaits within, when given the opportunity for self discovery.
Step 3: Express
Take a deep breath and now imagine yourself spending one day a month immersed fully in whatever your creative spirit yearns for. Yes! One entire day each month devoted to your heart’s desires. This is not selfish behavior. Imagine how renewed and rejuvenated you would feel after a full day of filling your inner pitcher through reading, journaling, art-making, walks in nature, gardening, poetry writing, dancing, or simply “being” with your Self.
Step 4: Imagine
An ultimate goal might be to plan ahead for an annual solo-retreat for three or more days. Once a year you pack up whatever nourishes your creativity, your spirit and your sacred imagination and you go to a place that is nurturing for your body and soul.
Step 5: Transformation
If you begin with Step 1, and commit to practice it for one month, you will create space in your life for transformation to begin. Once you are grounded in your journaling practice for discernment you may wish to add the additional steps. Committed practice will pave the way to living your authentic creative/spiritual life…day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year.
Sacred practices such as: Silence and contemplation, devotion and prayer, beauty and creation, etc. enrich life’s journey.
- List all the creative forms of expression you would like to try. Don’t edit!! Examples: Ballet, piano, weaving, watercolor painting, French cooking, quilting, carpentry, gardening, etc.
- Create a collage to reflect (one or more) personal creative passions.
- Write a prayer to reflect your commitment to nourish your sacred imagination and your creative spirit as a co-creator with the Divine.
Complete the following prompts:
