Today I am sixty-eight years old. I’m another year closer to the end of a decade. The average lifespan for a woman is 81.2 years. My mother celebrated her 90th birthday last spring. Numbers and statistics are only numbers and statistics.
A lifetime consists of so much more. I prefer to think of each decade of my life as a chapter of my story.
0-10 years: Chapter 1: Discovery and Wonder
10-20 years: Chapter 2: Growing through Love
20-30 years: Chapter 3: Womanhood and Mothering
30-40 years: Chapter 4: At Home in the World
30-50 years: Chapter 5: Descending and Letting Go
50-60 years: Chapter 6: Truth and Consequences
60- so far: Chapter 7: The Blessing of Grace
As I approach my seventies, I’m contemplating the next chapter of my story. The possibilities are endless, and today as I reflect on the past to inform and inspire this present moment I am grateful. I pray to walk through life’s remaining seasons, months, days, and hours in gratitude for the blessing of time. Time with God, my family, friends, nature, and time for work.
I reflect on the past and return to Chapter 1: Discovery and Wonder. This season and the approaching new decade of my life feels full with opportunity. There is still time for one more reinvention and with reinvention comes discovery and wonder. Chapter by chapter, I’m living into what remains. May I discover, in the coming years, what I was born to learn and may I always be in wonder for what lies beyond. Perhaps the final chapter is really the beginning.
When you contemplate each decade of your life, what are the titles for your chapters?
How does your past inform your present? Where have you been and where do aspire to go?
