Writing at the Ancestral Altar
An Autumn Retreat at the Edge of the Veil
October 29 - November 2, 2018
Villa Maria Del Mar
Santa Cruz, CA
Become a pilgrim and journey to the edge of the Pacific Ocean during the Autumn Triduum of Samhaim , All Saints and All Souls Feast Days, when the veil thins between the visible and invisible realms.
You’re invited to join writers and longtime friends and colleagues, Sibyl Dana Reynolds, and Pamela Sampel for an inaugural, sacred four-day writing retreat for women.
Within our circle of women, we will prayerfully create personal altars to honor the ancestors and mystics that inspire and inform our creative spirits. In community, we will create a portal of remembrance to reveal corridors and passageways leading to the sacred imagination, as we commune with the ancestors, mystics, saints and angels.
Each morning you’ll receive a gift to offer inspiration and beauty to bless your day. Daily writing will draw upon the spiritual wisdom represented by our altars and reflected through the poetry and prayers of the mystics. Evenings will offer voluntary opportunities for sharing and witnessing the day’s scribing with the circle.
During the retreat, you will have the opportunity to experience an optional spiritual direction or project consultation with one of the facilitators. Delicious, healthy meals and snacks will provide sustenance each day. Your own private room, cozy community spaces, and various outdoor spaces provide a variety of writing environments.
This retreat will be prayerful, sacred, and spiritually centered with periods for silence and reflection, and spaciousness for writing, visioning, and contemplation. Each day will gently unfold within a community of women writers in a comfortable and nurturing setting with the sounds of the sea at our backs. All levels of writing experience are honored and welcomed.
"If you feel even the tiniest pull to attend a retreat, make this one be the one. Sibyl and Pamela are brilliant at creating just the right combination of group time and solitude. Every detail of their retreat is thoughtfully designed to nurture you and your writing. If you have a writing project you need time for, this is the place and they are the guides who will provide it for you. If you need gentle assistance, you will find that, too.”
~ Mary Montayne
"Whatever your writing style, experience, or confidence-level ... any retreat with Pamela and Sibyl will enrich your craft and your soul. They are amazing at creating a safe and sacred space for women writers that allows for writing time, thought-provoking group interaction, and plenty of restorative self-care."
This retreat will offer inspiration for our writer's hearts to engage personal stories through a sacred lens of remembrance, reconnecting us with the lineage and legacy of the ancestors and mystics who speak/sing/call to our souls.
Prior to the retreat, you will receive an email with general information and a list of suggested, simple materials to be used to create your personal ancestral altar as a visual prayer to honor the spirits of the ancestors and mystics that inspire and inform your life. All personal materials will return with you at the close of the retreat.
Daily writing will arise from personal story, prompts, poems, and prayers while we encounter the ancestral voices and sacred wisdom awaiting at the edge of the veil.
Your creative spirit will be cocooned in a contemplative setting and nourished...physically, emotionally, and spiritually. While at Villa Maria del Mar, you will experience the luxury of time and spaciousness to devote yourself entirely to your writing, however you are inspired to express it. You may choose fiction, non-fiction, journaling, poetry, memoir, letter writing, or simply the free flow of words from your spirit to the page. Bring your pen and your open heart to the sea and open your imagination to touch the veil and sacred realm of ancestral and mystical wisdom.
